Part XII: BikeSummer 2007

New Haven cyclists are hoping a series of events this summer will help bring public attention to their concerns, and encourage more people to take up life on two wheels.

The first BikeSummer was held in 1999 as a celebration of cycling in San Francisco. New Haven will be among at least seven communities worldwide to carry on the tradition in 2007. (The others are Los Angeles; Portland, Calif.; Columbus, Ohio; Birmingham, U.K.; Lisbon, Portugal; and Happy Camp, Calif.)

BikeSummer is described by ECC as “a summer-long celebration of bicycle culture” dedidcated to the goals of “promoting safe use of the roads by cyclists and motorists, educating people about the rights and responsibilities of all road users, encouraging people to see cycling not only as a healthy means of recreation but a viable means of transportation, and integrating cycling with life in New Haven.”

Details are still being worked out, but the marquee event will be a “century ride” — a 100-mile bike ride that starts in New Haven and rolls thrown West Haven, Milford, Wallingford, Durham and Madison. The ride is fully supported with rest stops and a sag vehicle.

Less ambitious cyclists can choose among 25-, 50- and 65-mile rides. (The latter are called “metric century” rides because they total 100 kilometers.) Free registration is required.
